Additional supplements I take

Milk thistle (silymarin)  - supports the liver

Bee pollen - adds protein and other good stuff

Flor-essence tea - similar to essiac tea

Colostrum - immune support

Rescue Remedy - Ah! It calms the nerves.  This is a handy spray bottle to have on hand any time you need some calming.  I recommend when sitting in traffic, when the kids are screaming, when your mom is intolerable, when your co-workers are idiots... anytime you just need some chillin'.

Here are links to purchase the supplements.  The ones below are all good quality.  Be careful when buying them from an unknown source.  Some can be very poor quality.  One tip to do before swallowing any pill is to let it sit in a glass of vinegar and water overnight.  If it doesn't dissolve, then don't eat it.  Sewer systems are filled with pills like Centrum that are indigestible.

Supplement Tips

from prior months

Feel like you're getting the flu?  Take Oscillococcinum as soon as you start to get symptoms.  It decreases the duration and intensity of flu symptoms, including fever, chills, body aches and pains.  No drug interactions.  It says adults and children 2 and over, but we gave it to Jake when he vomited and had a fever the other night.  Instantly he was fine and went right to sleep.  Keep this on hand in your medicine cabinet!!
Fish Oil - For those of you who know me well, you know this as "rolly pollys".  My kids have been taking fish oil supplements for years - they fight over them.  My cousin Brandon was watching my kids one time during lunch and said, to them "You don't get your rolly pollys until you finish your sandwich"... then looked at me and laughed at how crazy that sounded.  This supplement is basically a cure-all.  Everyone should be taking this.  I could go on for days about all the things it's good for.  I started taking it during pregnancy and it immediately stopped the nausea and vomiting.  (Why wasn't I taking it in the first place! Doh!)  Here are some highlights:
  •  Heart health

  •  Depression

  •  ADHD / Hyperactivity

  •  Boosts immune function

  •  Complexion (healthy skin)

  •  Mental clarity

Ashwagandha - This herb is used primarily to help the body adapt to stress, which is why it is classified as an adaptogen.  It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 2000 years. It has been shown to regulate blood sugar, have anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, and antioxidant properties. It has been used to treat diseases with nerve tissue damage and arthritis sufferers.  It increases endurance and sexual performance, combats anxiety, increases fertility, and helps you sleep.  If you are taking sedative drugs, do not take at the same time except under supervision.  May cause drowsiness.

I  went to see Dr. David Simon, who works with Deepak Chopra at the Chopra Center here in Carlsbad.  Because he has written books and teaches classes regarding wellness and cancer, I was curious what he would say to me.  He told me I was doing great and the only advice he had for me was to take Ashwagandha.  I guess I was a little high strung.  Actually I do notice a difference when I take it - I'm much more even keeled.  You have to take it regularly for a few days before it kicks in.  Take 1-3 capsules a day.

Bee pollen.  Great for seasonal allergies - taken every day it helps your body develop a resistance to pollens in the air.  It is a great form of protein including lots of amino acids.  It helps your blood by regulating cholesterol and triglyceride levels and strengthens capillaries.  It stimulates ovarian function so its good for helping women more fertile.  It also has anti-cancer properties.

Sprinkle on your oatmeal, applesauce, fruit, or mash with a banana.  I started adding bee pollen into my diet over a year ago, because it is part of the Gerson program.  They told me that it adds protein into my diet (since the program is vegetarian).  Only recently did I discover it's other great properties.  Buy locally.

Coenzyme Q10 is currently my favorite supplement.  It naturally occurs in your body; often cancer and heart disease patients are deficient in this enzyme.  It helps cells to produce energy and it acts as an antioxidant.  It stimulates the immune system and protects the heart.

When I run out of something I usually wait a few days to see if I notice a difference.  A day or two after I stop taking CoQ10 I get more tired and my heart beats harder.  Hours after taking it, I feel better.  300mg a day for energy and heart health. Cancer patients and anyone taking statin drugs should take CoQ10; be careful if taking warfarin.
